Gift cards for Walmart, Tractor Supply and Amazon.com for supplies are also wonderful!

On Tuesday afternoon this week, our shelter received a call from a State Police investigator asking if we could take in some animals seized from a farm in Westtown. That started a mad dash to prepare for animals we are not accustomed to housing. A quick call to Bonny Lass Stables got us transport and before the end of the day the trailer rolled in with three goats (one of whom may be pregnant), a potbellied pig and 32 rabbits on board.

It’s taken us two days of blood, sweat and tears to get them all examined and into clean housing. Our staff and a small but dedicated group of volunteers has been nothing short of amazing. Dr. Dubensky at Milford Animal Hospital stepped up once again to treat those most in need of veterinary care. While we were all shocked and saddened at the condition of the rabbits in particular, we’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of community support for our efforts to make them as comfortable as we can.

None of the animals are currently available for adoption pending the completion of the cruelty investigation and the release of the animals by authorities to be adopted out (or returned to the owners).

We don’t know how long this might take. In the meantime, the Humane Society of Port Jervis welcomes donations to assist with caring for these animals, as well as the many dogs, cats and kittens already in the shelter waiting for homes.
